Insurance Blogging-How To Use “Tables” In Your Post

Some of the WordPress blog templates are, well to me, just plain boring. The default template that most of use to start an insurance blog is probably the most boring template I have ever seen. All you can do is type paragraph after paragraph in a single column, then if you want to include Google AdSense ads, the only place to put them is between the paragraphs of the post. Let’s look at a very simple way to “divide” the blog page into two columns using simple “tables”.

Let’s suppose I wanted to add an image to the right of this paragraph. All I have to do is put that image in a “table” and there it is!

Let’s suppose I wanted to add an image to the right of this paragraph. All I have to do is put that image in a “table” and there it is!

Let’s Break This Down A Bit:

We are simply telling our computer to draw a “table” or “box” that is “500″ pixels wide (approximately 5 1/2 inches). We don’t want a border.

We want this “table” divided into two columns, one “280 pixels” wide and the other, “220 pixels” wide.

So, here’s what we have:

Tables Are Made Up Of:

Table Rows = “tr”
Table Data = “td”

If you want to try “Tables” in your blog pages, just “Copy” and “Paste” the above code. This table is “500 pixels” wide and should fit in most blog templates. If it doesn’t fit, reduce the size of the table to say “480″.

You will, of course, substitute your own text in place of mine.
You can also place Google AdSense ads in either of the two columns.

It’s not really that complicated, just very difficult to write instructions on how to use it. My best suggestion is just to play with it until it works the way you want it.

If you try to do “Step 7″ before you finish “Step 4″, you will most likely have problems.

AdSense Is Step #9: Until you have sufficient blog content posted to your blog, you should not even be concerned about setting up an AdSense account. I would recommend 2 Posts in each of 4 Categories first. Google does not approve every request.

Insurance Blogging “Sidebar Widgets”

We previously “Activated” plugins for your insurance blog to help make the blog more “user friendly” and now we need to add some “Navigation” to our insurance blog, so we, as well as, our visitors can easily move around the different areas of the blog.

We Now Want To Enter The “Sidebar Widgets” Tab.

When you click on the “Sidebar Widgets” tab, you should arrive at this page:

Here, you will design the “look” of the shaded area or “Sidebar” that appears on the right side of your blog pages. This is simply a “drag” and “drop” process.

You can layout the “Sidebar” any way you want it and you can move the “widgets” up and down in the “Sidebar” until you get them just the way you want them. Just “drag” and “drop”.

VERY IMPORTANT: You will notice that I have highlighted the “Meta” widget. Before you leave this page, make sure you have placed the “Meta” widget in the “Sidebar”. This widget contains your log-in link and if you fail to include it in the “Sidebar”, you will not be able to log-in to your blog from the “Home Page”.

Don’t get alarmed if after you have moved the “widgets” into the “Sidebar”, nothing shows up on your blog page.
For Example:You may have moved the “Recent Posts” and “Categories” widgets into the “Sidebar”, but when you view your home page, they aren’t there. These links will not show up until you have written a “Post” and assigned it to a “Category”. If both of these sections are blank, there is nothing to display.

I hope that you understand that the first priority in building your insurance blog is to create a minimum of 4 “Blog Categories” and write a minimum of 2 “Posts” to each category. You will then be ready to create a Google AdSense account and start using the “ads” on your insurance blog. You will find a very informative “Blogtimize” help section in your AdSense account. There are several ideas created by Google to make the most of your AdSense ads. We will discuss a couple of ad placement ideas in this section.

Placing AdSense Ads In Your Insurance Blog

In this example we will look at placing AdSense ads between “Post” paragraphs, as well as, on the right side of our insurance blog text. To accomplish this, you will create a “table” to place the blog text on one side and the AdSense ads on the other side. (This page was created in this manner.)

Customizing Insurance Blog Text

If you want to “spice up” your insurance blog by adding “bold text”, “italic text” or create “links” to other pages within your insurance blog or even to other blogs or web sites, we will learn how to do those things now. We have already discussed “adding color“.

When you open the “Write” tab from your “Dashboard” or “Site Admin”, you will see a bar across the top with several editing tabs on it, similar to this:

Hopefully, this presentation will help you understand how these editing tabs work.

(Click anywhere on the viewing screen to activate the presentation and then the “Forward” button should work just fine.)

Insurance Blog - Writing A “Post”

In other areas of this Insurance Blogging Blog, we have discussed the importance of a good blog title, blog description, blog categories and quality blog content. Now we will focus on actually creating a “Post” to our insurance blog.

Writing A “Post” To Your Insurance Blog

The very first step in this process is to log-in to your “Dashboard” or “Site Admin”, then click on the “Write” tab and the template will automatically default to “Post”.

You should be looking at something like this:

“Title” and “Post Slug”

We will talk about these two items together because they are related.

Let’s just assume that the “Title” of our “Post” is:

If we didn’t do anything, the URL for this particular page of your insurance blog would be so long it wouldn’t fit in your browser’s window. The “Post Slug”allows us to abbreviate this page for the search engines.

The “Post Slug” for this article could be shortened to:

buying-auto-insurance

“Categories”

You should have already outlined your insurance blog by listing four or five different categories. You will assign this “Post” to one of those “Categories” by typing in the name of that “Category” and click “Add”.

PLEASE NOTE: If you have added your “Categories” through the “Manage Categories” of your “Admin” section, the “Category” will not show up on your “Home Page” until you have made a “Post” to that particular category.

At this point your “Post” should have a “Title”, a “Category” and a “Post Slug”. The only thing left is to actually enter the text of your “Post” article.

IMPORTANT: I do not use the “Visual Rich Editor”, because I find it more trouble than it’s worth. If you choose to use this editing tool, that’s OK, but I can’t give any instruction in the use of this tool. I like to have total control of the page and prefer to enter the HTML myself. It’s really not that difficult.

We have used several text editing tags in this example, but you really don’t have to use any of them. If you want your “Post” in simple paragraph form, just type it in the editing area and hit the “Enter” key between paragraphs.

For your first “Post”, why not just enter in simple paragraph form and then come back later and customize it if you like.

Setting Up AdSense “Search” Ads

Step #1: Log-in to your AdSense account.

Step #2: Select the “AdSense Setup” tab at the top of page.

Step #3: Click on “AdSense for Search”

There are two places on this page you will need to customize:

“Google Web Search + Site Search” should already be selected. All you need to do here is to add the URL of your insurance blog.
More Options: Open the drop down menu and change “Your Site Encoding” to - Unicode(UTF-8).
Click on “Continue”.

Step #4: Select “Safe Search” and click “Continue”.

Step #5: You should now see the AdSense “code” for your insurance blog’s “Search” box. Copy and paste this code into the same file you previously saved in “Notepad”.

Now You Can Add The “Search” Box To Your Insurance Blog Pages By:

Insurance Blogging With “AdSense Deluxe”

Most of the WordPress templates we will use in creating an insurance blog will have a plug-in included, called “AdSense Deluxe”. This feature when “Activated” will create an abbreviated ad code, which I call an “Ad Slug”. I’m sure that is not the correct “computer” term, but this is our insurance blog and we will just call it an “Ad Slug”. Here’s how it works.

Go get you a cup of coffee or any beverage of your choice and settle back for a few minutes. What we are about to do is really not complicated, but just like everything else, there is a “process”. You only have to set this up once and you just may be glad you took the time to do it.

Inserting AdSense Ads With “AdSense Deluxe”

Step #1: “Activate” the AdSense Deluxe Plug-In
Go to your “Dashboard” or “Site Admin” and click on the “Plugins” tab.
When this page opens, look about three down under “Plugins” and you should find “AdSense-Deluxe”.
Look on the far right under “Action” and click on “Activate”.
Your AdSense Deluxe plug-in is now ready to use.

Step #2: Let’s Build Some “Ad Slugs”

From your “Dashboard” or “Site Admin”, click on the “Options” tab. Now you should see a tab in the black area underneath called - “AdSense Deluxe” - click on it.
Scroll down about half-way and you should see this:

OK, let’s make some assumptions:
(1) Our insurance blog is about “Life Insurance”.
(2) We are building AdSense ads for “Content” about “life insurance”.

Making “Slugs”

Name: Call this ad something and make it short. In this example, we are naming the ad - “contentlife”.
AdSense Code: Just copy and paste the ad “code” you have already saved in Notepad.
Description: Completely optional, but this may be a good way to keep up with your ads.
When you click on the “Add AdSense Block” - something magical happens.

Eleven lines of AdSense code has been transformed to this:

Looks Like An
“Ad-Slug” To Me!

Now, when you want this particular ad to appear on a blog page, simply copy and paste the “slug”, instead of all that code.
